1. First Generation of Computer

In this generation of computer, the computer started from the year 1940 but it is believed to be between 1942 -1955. Vacuum tubes were used in this generation. Whose invention J.P.Eckert (J. Pressper Eckert) and J.W.Mauchy (J. W. Mauchly) invented the first successful electronic computer named ENIAC in 1904.

Some examples are:

ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer)

UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer)

EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer)

IBM70 (International Business Machines 70) etc.

Computers of this generation were very large, difficult to write programs, slow speed, lack of memory space, as well as high cost, did not even reach the general public.

2 .2nd Generation of Computer

The computer in this generation was started from 1956 to 1965. In this the speed of the computer was much higher than that of the first generation. In this, the first generation vacuum tube was replaced by the transistor. The transistor was invented in 1948. These are somewhat smaller than vacuum tubes. The invention of the transistor brought a revolution in the field of electronic technology.

After the introduction of the transistor, the size of the computer also improved a lot. The working speed and capacity of these computers had also become more than the earlier computers. In this generation Assembly Language was used for programming the computer and the memory had become about 100 kilobytes.

3 . 3rd Generation of Computer

The computer in this generation was started from 1966 to 1975. In this generation of computers, Integrated Circuits (I.C) were being used in place of transistors. In this the computer was somewhat smaller, more reliable, higher speed, cost less, easier to carry and less space was required to set it up than the previous generation.

High level programming language was used to write programs in this generation of computers and these computers were also capable of doing more than one task at a time.

Examples of main computers of this generation :-

1- IBM-360m and IBM 370/168

2- Programable Data Processor (PDP-1, PDP-5, PDP-8, ICL 1900 ).

 3- UNIVAC (1108 and 9000) etc.

4 . 4th Generation of Computer

The computer in this generation was started from 1976 to 2005. In this generation, two types of chips such as Large Scale Integration (LSI) and Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) were manufactured. In this, instead of the previous generation transistors, microprocessors were used and they were called micro computers.

There are some different types of microprocessors, some companies also made microprocessor chips based on their own technology. Like Intel has 8080, 8085, 8086, 80286, 80486, Pentium, Motorola 6800, 68000 and Apple, IBM etc.

In this generation, different types of computers were manufactured such as personal computers, micro computers, mainframe computers, etc.  

5 . 5th Generation of Computer

This generation has been going on since 2005 till now. The computers of this generation are still in the state of development. In these computers A. Developed with I. (Artificial Intelligence). A.I. means that computer or machine can understand human qualities. With this, it will be possible to do the work of Voice Recognition and Image Control with great efficiency and fast speed. This generation computer is based on Graphical User Interface (GUI).

 

 In this generation, we are now working with some devices like finger print, robot, giving input by voice etc. The main objective of this generation is to create such a computer or machine that can understand and respond to the user's language and at the same time that computer or machine is also capable of learning.

The computer or machine of this generation is quite powerful, rich, small in size and equipped with new qualities. In the coming few years, computers or machines will become twice as powerful. Who will be able to understand the feelings and thoughts of human beings.
